Effective length is a calculation used in duct design that accounts for the friction loss of every elbow, tee, and fitting in your Ducted system. For example, a single 90-degree elbow might have an "effective length" of 30 feet, meaning it restricts the air as much as 30 feet of straight pipe would. Technicians must calculate the total effective length to ensure the Air Handlers has enough power to move the required CFM through the entire house. If the effective length is too high, you will experience poor airflow and increased noise at the vents.
