Bypass Damper

A bypass damper is a pressure-relief component used in zoned HVAC systems to manage excess air pressure when only one or two zones are calling for air. When some Zone Dampers close, the air pressure in the main duct increases, which can cause noise and damage the blower motor. The bypass damper opens to reroute that excess air back into the return air plenum, maintaining a steady balance within the system. This is a critical addition for high-performance Multi-Zone Systems to ensure the longevity of the ductwork and the air handler. It can be weighted or electronically controlled based on the complexity of the installation. Without a properly tuned bypass, you may hear a whistling sound from the registers when the system is under high static pressure. Many installers include these when setting up ACIq systems to guarantee quiet and efficient operation. It effectively acts as a safety valve for your home's airflow.
